Adventures in recruitment marketing and employer branding

William Hill

Recruitment marketing / William Hill

A singular story of mass recruitment

The beginning

We’re not people to shy away from the limelight. And we don’t mind going above and beyond for a client either. So, when we needed real-life models at short notice for a William Hill photo shoot, our people were more than happy to strike a pose.

Grand National day is a busy time for William Hill. Their telebetting centres need extra staff to cope with the huge increase in calls from customers wanting to place bets. So our challenge was to find a cost-effective way of recruiting a large number of people to work for just a single day.

The middle

We decided a refer-a-friend poster campaign would be the most inexpensive and effective solution. Our creative teams developed a campaign idea – ‘Could your friend be a Grand National winner?’ The hook was that employees could win a bonus by encouraging their friends to work in the telebetting centre for Grand National day.

The posters showed ordinary people dressed as jockeys. And this is where our dedicated recruitment marketing team came in. The visual gag is that these people (who represent the employees’ friends) are all too big, tall, unfit etc. to ever be jockeys. Perhaps not the most flattering of photo shoots our team have been involved in, but they rose to the occasion and happily donned their riding boots.

The end

The result was a hugely successful attraction campaign. William Hill sourced staff they needed. And, much to the delight of the client, the campaign paid for itself several times over by saving on employment agency fees.
